The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has contracted through Social Solutions International to recruit and hire qualified individuals for the following position:

                 

Title: 

Copy-Editor, Communications Specialist

United States Agency for International Development

Office of the Executive Secretary (AID/ES)

Introductory Statement:

This position is located in the Office of the Executive Secretary, U.S. Agency for International Development. The purpose of this position is to perform copy-editing duties for the senior staff, including, but not limited to, writing-editing services for the Administrator, the Deputy Administrator, and other senior Agency officials for all correspondence passing through AID/ES.

Responsibilities

Speechwriter and Editorialist 80%

Rewrites and edits memos, reports, letters, and other correspondence transmitted to/for the Administrator and Front Office staff.  In addition to editing for correct grammar, punctuation, style, and format, evaluates documents in terms of purpose, audience, scope, content, organization, and logic; based on that evaluation.  Ensures paragraph unity and coherence; promoting clarity of thought.  Eliminates jargon and redundancies.

 

Ensures that documents are edited and produced according to established formats and the AID/ES Style Guide. Changes style errors in copy while editing. Identifies and recommends solutions to problems with formats.

Works with AID/ES team members and Bureaus/Independent Office staff to ensure that organization is logical and issues are adequately developed, to develop additional data, to write analytical material, and to eliminate unnecessary editing and typing.

 

Proofreads the retype of the editor's draft, notation drafts, and final documents for typographical and grammatical errors. Ensures that final documents conform to established standards.  Ensures all references in correspondence are accurate.

 

Evaluates the appropriateness and accuracy of graphic materials, providing advice and recommendations when necessary.

 

 

Staff Trainer 20%

Proposes technical or production improvements and participates in implementing these changes.  Develops/establishes policies and procedures to ensure awareness of and adherence to style guides. 

 

Develops and implements a training regimen to provide new and current staff with an understanding of how to write for senior principals.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience.
  • Advanced writing skills to effectively and concisely explain complex issues to senior officials with limited time and bandwidth, and ability to tailor writing to the writing style of the Administrator and others for whom the incumbent is writing.
  • Knowledge of USAID programs, projects, policies, procedures, and personnel is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational ability and demonstrated capability to work with senior USAID and other government officials in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
  • S. citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a secret security clearance.
